What is a dimmable LED driver?

          Do you know what are the dimming methods of LED drive power supply? LED dimming power supply generally has Silicon controlled dimming, 0-10V dimming, PWM dimming, resistance dimming, DALI dimming, DMX512 dimming and so on.
(1) Silicon controlled dimming
The silicon controlled dimmer is a high-power semiconductor device with four layers of three PN junction. Generally, it is formed by the reverse connection of two thyristors.Its function is not only rectifier, but also can be used as a contactless switch on or off quickly;The circuit can be converted into a direct current.Inverting alternating current and so on.Silicon contronlled dimming is divided into front dimming and back edge dimming.The front dimming uses SCR as a switching device, and its cost is lower than that of the back dimming.
Advantages: small size, high efficiency, good stability, reliable work advantages.
Disadvantages: Silicon controlled dimmer in the cutting phase will lead to power supply noise, strobe, a single dimming drive power supply can not control multiple lights.And the cost of the back dimming is more complex than that of the front dimming circuit, which is not easy to stabilize.

              
(2) 0-10V dimming power supply
0-10V dimming power supply is an analog dimming mode, which is different from silicon controlled dimming power supply in that there are two more 0-10V interfaces (Dim+ and Dim-) on the 0-10V power supply. Through 0-10V voltage change, change the output current of LED dimming power supply, adjust the brightness, dimming range of 5% - 100%.
Advantages: simple application, good compatibility, high precision, good dimming effect.
Disadvantages: need separate dimmer and interface, easy to be affected by the quality of wire and wire length, high wiring cost

 
(3) PWM dimming power supply
Basic principle of PWM: the control mode is to control the on-off of the switching device of the inverter circuit, so that the output end can get a series of pulses with equal amplitude, and use these pulses to replace the sine wave or the required waveform. PWM adjusts the brightness by adjusting the pulse width ratio. In a PWM cycle, because the human eye flickers the light greater than 100Hz, the perceived brightness is a cumulative process, that is, the greater the pulse width in the entire cycle, the greater the proportion of the human eye. The eyes feel brighter and brighter, and the dimming range is 1%-100%.
Advantages: accurate dimming, no color deviation, no stroboscopic, large adjustable range.
Disadvantages: when the frequency of PWM dimming is between 200 ~ 20kHz, the noise can be heard by the human ear, and it needs a separate dimming device and interface, so the installation and wiring is troublesome.

 
(4) Resistance dimming power supply
Principle of resistance dimming: The resistance dimming power supply changes the resistance value through adjustable resistance, thereby changing the brightness of the light and realizing dimming.
Advantages: simple application, good compatibility, high precision, good dimming effect
Disadvantages: a separate dimmer and interface are required, which is susceptible to the quality of the wire and wire length.

 
(5) Dali dimming
Dali standard has defined a Dali network, including the largest 64 units (independent address), 16 groups and 16 scenarios. Different lighting units on Dali bus can be grouped flexibly to realize different scene control and management. In practical application, a typical Dali controller can control up to 40 ~ 50 lamps, which can be divided into 16 groups, and can process some actions in parallel. In a Dali network, it can process 30-40 control instructions per second. This means that the controller needs to manage 2 dimming commands per second for each lighting group.
Advantages: simple design, economic installation, reliable communication and accurate control.
Disadvantages: additional control circuit and controller need to be added.

 
(6) DMX512 dimming
DMX512 is a kind of digital dimming protocol, developed by USITT (American Theater Technology Association) to control the dimmer from the standard digital interface of the console. DMX512 surpasses the analog system, but it cannot completely replace the analog system. Its output signal transmission method is: RS485 differential signal transmission, which effectively guarantees the reliability of its signal.
Advantages: the lamps can be grouped freely and controlled independently without changing the circuit
Disadvantages: special wiring layout and type are required, and certain programming is required, so the later maintenance cost is high and the price is high.
