Triac dimming has been used in LED lighting for a long time and is the most widely used dimming method on the market. The working principle of Triac dimming is to cut the waveform of the input voltage through the conduction angle to generate a tangential output voltage waveform. When dimming is performed by the triac signal, the input voltage waveform deviates from the sine wave due to the change of the conduction angle of the triac, which also changes the effective value of the input voltage, and realizes dimming by changing the voltage.

The triac dimming works with high efficiency and low dimming cost. It is compatible with existing circuits and doesn't require rewiring. There are two types of triac dimming, one is leading edge phase-cut dimming, and the other is trailing edge phase-cut dimming. In theory, trailing edge dimming is more suitable for dimming LED lights.
